Monaco is not a French town. It is a sovereign state, with its own courts, its own law and its own list of expert translators and interpreters. This distinction, often overlooked, has very concrete consequences for the validity of your documents.

A document translated for use in France is not automatically admissible in the Principality, and the reverse is equally true. This page clarifies what applies in your situation.

Monaco is a sovereign state: what that changes

The Principality has its own judicial system: a court of first instance, a court of appeal and a Court of Revision. Expert translators and interpreters are registered on a list maintained by the Monegasque authorities, independent of the French lists.

The direct consequence: French sworn status does not confer registration in Monaco. A translator registered with a French court of appeal is not, for that reason alone, an expert before the Monegasque courts.

This does not mean a French translation is unusable in the Principality. It depends on the recipient and the nature of the document.

Which translation for which procedure?

For proceedings before a Monegasque court — civil or criminal litigation in Monaco — the requirement is in principle an expert on the Monegasque list. The court registry or your Monegasque lawyer will confirm the applicable framework.

For a Monegasque administrative procedure — residence card, application to a government department — requirements vary according to the department handling the file. Some accept a French sworn translation, others do not. Checking beforehand avoids a rejection.

For a document intended for France from Monaco — a Monegasque document to be produced at the préfecture des Alpes-Maritimes, before a French notary or a French court — French sworn translation is what is required. Our registration with the Cour d'appel de Montpellier applies throughout French territory.

For a private or business exchange — meeting, negotiation, appointment with an adviser, property viewing — no sworn status is legally required. What matters then is competence and discretion.

Interpreting in Monaco: common situations

A significant share of requirements in Monaco concerns professional interpreting rather than official documents:

  • Wealth management meetings: discussions with a wealth manager, a family office or a banking institution.
  • Property transactions: viewings, negotiations, discussions with the agency and advisers.
  • Confidential business meetings, board meetings, commercial negotiations.
  • Yachting: dealings with crews, shipyards and brokers.
  • Events and private stays: continuous support over several days.

In these settings the primary requirement is professional rather than legal: accuracy, command of technical vocabulary and, above all, absolute confidentiality. The subjects involved — assets, structures, family circumstances — demand complete discretion.

Our languages in Monaco

We work in Arabic, Russian, English, French, Italian, German and Spanish, seven languages that match the communities most present in the Principality:

  • Russian: Russian-speaking residents, property investment, wealth structuring.
  • Arabic, all dialects: Gulf clients, stays, acquisitions, business relationships.
  • English: the dominant working language in Monaco for international business, yachting and finance.

Interpreting formats

Consecutive — the interpreter renders each contribution after it is spoken. Suited to meetings, negotiations and interviews: it allows time for precision.

Whispered — the interpreter renders the exchange quietly in real time for one or two people. Suited to meetings where only one party needs support, without interrupting proceedings.

Liaison — for viewings, travel and informal exchanges: the interpreter accompanies and facilitates the conversation throughout.

Remote — video conferencing, for preparatory meetings or exchanges that do not warrant travel.

Arranging an assignment

Our practice is based in the Hérault and we work regularly on the French Riviera and in Monaco. A few days' notice allows travel to be arranged and, more importantly, the assignment to be prepared: context, terminology, participants.
